Some Basic Dressing and Clothing Purchase Guidelines

1.  Choose your signature look.  Decide what kind of clothes you need for different purposes (especially in your daily life), and then what kind of style you want to dress with ideally.  When you get to the store, stick to that style with your purchases.

2.  Buy clothes that flatter you and that will make you feel good about yourself and your body.  If you wear rags and “house cleaning” clothes all the time, it will be absolutely impossible for you to maintain a proper sense of self-worth, as well as the confident demeanor that goes with it.  Don’t ruin your chances with what you put on in the morning, before you’ve ever even stepped out the door.  You’ll be sure to see the difference in how other people treat you as well.  And don’t use your diet struggles as an excuse to dress poorly.  Pony up the money to look good anyway.  It will put you in a more positive frame of mind to stick with your diet.  ”If I can look this nice at this weight, think how much better I’ll look at my goal weight!!”

3.  Choose classic pieces with quality material and construction.  Certain pieces, such as a black pencil skirt, a leather jacket or coat, dress shirts, or a wool jacket, are pieces you can ALWAYS make use of.  Make sure to grab opportunities to get these items, well made and well tailored.  They will stand you in good stead for years to come.

4.  Watch the colors.  Colors can make pieces difficult to match to other pieces in your wardrobe.  If you’re on a budget, stay with a more monochromatic wardrobe that will give you more flexibility.

5.  Organize your closet so you can easily find what you need.  Put clothes of a certain type together, so that you’ll always be able to locate them.

What Classic Pieces Does A Woman Need??

1.  Accessories.  A few classic pieces with a little pop will ensure that you always look finished.

2.  Black dress.  A basic dress that fits well and is suitable for any place from the office to the red carpet.  It will also be handy for funerals.

3.  Cardigan.  A neutral “sweater jacket” is an easy way to stay warm on a chilly fall or spring day, without looking to bulky.

4.  Jeans.  Choose quality material with some stretch, and a flattering and classic cut.  If you get a long enough pair, you can dress them up with heels, or roll a single cuff and wear them with flats.

5.  Suit.  A well-made suit will take you through business meetings and other formal “business” occasions, as well as giving you two handy, separate pieces: the jacket and the dress pants or skirt.

6.  T-shirts.  Go for a variety of neck shapes and sleeve lengths.

7.  White button-down shirt.  This will work with your suit and also with your jeans, to be either dressy or more casual.

8.  Flats.  These can keep you looking stylish but comfortable, especially if you are NOT comfortable walking around in heels all the time.  Constant pain and grimacing is not stylish.

9.  Heels.  Every woman needs a good pair of basic black pumps.

10.  Handbag.  Choose a classic style, just large enough and with enough pockets to accommodate all of your personal supplies, so that you are always prepared.

A Different Smokey Eye For Spring 2012

At the Rodarte Spring 2012 runway show, models were sporting a dark and yet more colorful version of the ever-popular, ever-flattering smokey-eye look.  NARS makeup artist James Kaliardos wanted to create a look that combines the trends of navy blue with the smokey eye and lavendard lips.

The look essentially consists of a base of purple, accented and darkened around the outside edges with black, and brightened at the inside of the eyes with blue.

The NARS application is a very dark one, not suited to daytime wear, and also much darker than many women would want to wear.

The interpretation from Fashionising is a much more wearable one, albeit still a bit dark for some women's taste.

It’s possible to create a daytime look and also a nighttime look that are perhaps a bit more subtle.

For a daytime look…

Base - Lilac

Inner Eye Accent - Ocean

Outer Eye Darkening - Titanium

 And for evening…

      Base – Divine Plum
Inner Eye Accent – Blue Slate

Outer Eye Darkening - Blackout

  1. Apply your base eye makeup color, both above and below the eye, blending around the edges.
  2. Apply the darkening eye shadow around the outer edges of the eye, both above and below.
  3. Apply the inner eye accent color, both above and below, lightly blending it in.
  4. Apply a smooth, medium line of black liquid eye liner above the eye, for definition that will grab people’s attention.
  5. With a slant-tip eyeshadow brush, lightly apply black liquid eye liner below the eye, using the brush to keep the look smokey.
  6. Apply two layers of mascara.  For an even more dramatic look, apply false lashes to the upper lid.

Inexpensive Home Beauty Remedies… And Why You Can Do Better

The benefits of olive oil for your skin.  Heck, drink a tablespoon a day while you’re at it.

Egg masks.  Fruit masks.  Believe it or not, today I saw someone promoting a DIY kitty litter mask.  No joke!!

Eat more fruit.  Incidentally, more than a very small amount of fruit sugars can seriously mess with your blood sugar and drop your metabolism.  Improve your skin while you get fat.

I use to do a lot of these things.  It sounds so good, so inexpensive, so easy.  After all, the big skin care companies are just ripping us off, right??

Yes… And No

The major companies advertised in many of the discount and department stores are often indeed a rip-off.  Many products use petroleum-based ingredients as fillers, artificial fragrances that may cause an allergic reaction, besides many additional pollutants that your poor body has to try to process and get rid of.  The skin is the most important detox organ and often the most polluted one as well.

But not all companies are created equal.  Not all companies are using cheap fillers so that they can afford to pay for celebrity endorsements.

My two personal favorites are Arbonne and Aveda.  Both have high-quality botanical ingredients.  Arbonne’s mantra is “Pure. Safe. Beneficial.”  Aveda’s mantra is “The Art and Science of Pure Flower and Plant Essences.”

So why should you consider paying good money for a product with alfalfa, blueberries, or other plants when you can get the same plants and foods at the grocery store for far less money??  It’s a pretty convincing argument… if you don’t know better.

Why It’s Worth It To Pay More

1.  Time.  Do you really want to spend your valuable life moments in the kitchen mixing up facial masks and hair treatments in the blender when you could be doing other things??  It’s much easier to go with a proven system.  Get advice from your skin care consultant or salon hair stylist, and then just follow the recommended regimen.

2.  Money.  This is the most common argument.  The fact is that just a tiny bit of high-quality product can dramatically improve your health, hair, and skin, even if you can’t afford a whole system.  Also, there are many ways to get discounts from companies, especially if you are a loyal buyer.  This is also where your consultant or hair stylist comes in.  Ask them to help you find a way to make the products affordable and work them into your routine.  It’s their job, and they’ll be happy to help.

3.  Effectiveness.  I don’t know how some people think these high-quality products are formulated, but it involves a heck of a lot more than just hitting the grocery store and then dumping some food in the blender.

These companies use very refined processing techniques to remove the useless and less effective parts of the plant, and get to the tiny part that produces the greatest results.  They also are in a position to acquire the finest and freshest organic plants in the first place.  Besides that, they know which ingredients to combine, and in what proportions, to produce the best results.

That’s something that isn’t going to happen in your mixing bowl.

In summary:

1.  Find a high-quality, reputable company.  Look for pictures and clinical trials showing their results, such as the photo below.

2.  Find out about the discounts and deals.  With some network marketing companies like Arbonne, there are ways to save as much as 80% on your purchase.

I get my Aveda products from my salon.

I shop online to get my Arbonne skin care.

Why You Should Use Pea Protein

You may have never heard of pea protein, but it’s actually one of the most beneficial types of protein out there.

Pea protein isn’t made from green peas, like you buy in the store.  Instead, it’s made from yellow split peas, a legume.

Pea protein is much more easily absorbed and utilized by the body than other vegetarian protein sources, and is in fact quite comparable to many animal sources of protein.

Pea protein is also:

  • Low in fat and carbohydrates
  • A vegan source of protein
  • High in amino acids
  • Naturally cholesterol free
  • Lactose- and gluten-free
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Generally less expensive than whey protein

Pea protein has the added benefits of lower blood pressure and fighting kidney disease.  High protein intake can be hard on your kidneys.  Because pea protein is good for your kidneys, it may be a healthier alternative to many other protein types, especially if you are trying to ingest large amounts of protein every day.

Pea protein shakes might be just what the doctor ordered!!

Use the sign-up form on the right to find out where I get my products, how I use them, and why.

Fat That Burns Fat… No Joke

Don't Be THIS Guy!!

Shape Magazine recently featured an article describing a study that was done on mice to test the effects of the hormone orexin on fat loss.  It turns out that a deficiency of this hormone is associated with obesity.  In the study, mice that were genetically programmed to be deficient in orexin gained more weight than regular mice, even when consuming fewer calories!!

While many readers seemed to be skeptical about this article and failed to see how this information could be helpful, I was not one of them.

Why??

Because of a book called The Four-Hour Body.

The Four-Hour Body is a book written by efficiency expert Tim Ferriss, to explain how to more quickly and easily trigger the kind of physical changes you wish to see… WITHOUT spending all of your time at the gym and without starving yourself or going without your favorite foods.

You Don't Have To Take The Polar Bear Plunge

So How Can Fat Burn Fat??  How Can This Work For Me??

In his studies, Mr. Ferriss found out that there are two kinds of fat: white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT).  It turns out that BAT can burn off excess calories as heat, calories that otherwise might contribute to your muffin top or your bubble butt.

Because BAT produces heat, it can be activated by cold.  This doesn’t mean that the answer is to freeze to death.  The key lies in knowing the “where” and the “how.”  There is a harsher method, and there is an easy method that Tim teaches.

Be assured that fat-burning fat is the real deal, and there’s no reason why it can’t start burning YOUR fat today!!

Read The Four-Hour Body to learn more…

The Benefits of Peppermint That You May Have Never Known

Peppermint Plant

Peppermint contains menthol, which has a cooling, soothing effect on skin.  The oil contains copper, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C, all known for their skin benefits.  Vitamin A can help get rid of lines and wrinkles, as well as acne.  Vitamin C, in combination with a cooling agent such as menthol, can help to counteract the effects of sun exposure.  Copper is often used in top anti-aging skin care products.
.
Peppermint has an effect of increasing blood flow, which has many skin benefits.  Dull skin comes to life with increased blood flow.  The internal and external toxins that cause acne can be carried away more quickly and effectively.  Red and blotchy skin is soothed, as is skin that is red and irritated from acne breakouts.  Peppermint is also antiseptic in nature, which can be very beneficial for acne and for cleansing.

Peppermint can be irritating to skin.  It’s a good idea to do a spot test for an allergic reaction before applying widespread.  Peppermint is not safe for women who are expecting, and the application of peppermint should be avoided with young children.

Where To Get It

As with any botanical products, it is important that products you buy which contain peppermint be relatively fresh and also produced with high-quality extracts from high-quality plants.  Otherwise, frankly, you’re probably kidding yourself about the benefits you think you’ll receive, and  you’re possibly wasting time and money.  Find out how long the products you are buying are stored before they’re sold, and what kind of results the company’s products have produced in clinical trials.  Then buy the best you can afford.

Never forget: A tiny amount and sparing application of a high-quality product is generally far more effective than a liberal application of an inferior product.

Why You Aren’t Reaching Your Goals And Getting the Work Done

Why your diet and exercise program fails…

Why your new habits don’t stick…

Why you aren’t using the new products you just purchased…

Why your house and vehicle aren’t cleaned up…

Why you’re procrastinating…

How Long It Takes To Make A Change

I have heard a number of different “guesstimates” as to how long it takes to form a new habit.  For some reason, 30 days was the time frame that always stuck in my mind.

So I decided to check it out further.  Here’s what I found:

“A lot of the change that comes about through processes like psychotherapy (or even just reading a self-help article or book and trying to put those ideas into effect in your life) requires forming new habits. Habits of thinking differently, of reacting differently, of behaving differently. And it can be a frustrating process as you wait for these changes to take effect and become more automatic, as habits do.

How long does it take to form a new habit? A week? A month? A year?

At least 2 months (or about 66 days, on average), according to the research.

Jeremy Dean over at PsyBlog the other week wrote a great entry that looked at what the research tells us about how long it takes us to form a new habit:

Although the average was 66 days, there was marked variation in how long habits took to form, anywhere from 18 days up to 254 days in the habits examined in this study. As you’d imagine, drinking a daily glass of water became automatic very quickly but doing 50 sit-ups before breakfast required more dedication (above, dotted lines). The researchers also noted that:

  • Missing a single day did not reduce the chance of forming a habit.
  • A sub-group took much longer than the others to form their habits, perhaps suggesting some people are ‘habit-resistant’.
  • Other types of habits may well take much longer.

So 66 days later, a simple habit might be in place and on automatic pilot. But as the research shows, it could as long as 8 and a half months for more complicated habits to take hold.”

You can read more on the subject by visiting PsychCentral’s blog.

How Much Work It Takes To Make A Change

In addition to the amount of time it takes to make a change, there is the number one thing that trips up most people: they foster unrealistic expectations about how much effort it will take to create the change, and then they get discouraged and quit as their expectations go unrealized.

So, what is a realistic expectation of the work required??  We can find the amount of “work” in a basic beginner chemistry graph.

Activation Energy Required to Create Change

The graph above shows a endothermic reaction, one where energy (heat) is added, one where the products (the results) contain more energy than the reactants (what you start out with).

You’ll notice that the activation energy, the energy required to create the products, requires more energy to be added than what is actually contained IN the products.  In other words, it will take significantly more energy to create the change than it takes to sustain the results.

The Two Takeaway Lessons

1.  Be realistic about your expectations and your efforts.  It will require significantly more effort to create the change than it takes to sustain it.  In other words, if you think you will lose your unwanted weight simply by eating a normal, healthy, moderate diet, you will be disappointed.  This doesn’t mean you should starve yourself or be on the treadmill 24/7.  The activation energy does not go sky high.  But it does go noticeably higher.  And if you want to see significant and fast age reversal, you will need to use a full line of high-powered, quality products on a very regular and regimented basis in order to see truly dramatic results.  A moderate and sustained increase in your efforts and discipline is sure to be rewarded.

2.  Focusing on a 66-day countdown can be invaluable to help you see how little time you actually have left where you need to “stick it out” to make the new habit stick.  This isn’t forever.  This is a time to focus on short-term, and especially on the fact that it IS a short term indeed!!

Radiating Natural Beauty

Radiance is all about boldly emphasizing your best points, and downplaying or ignoring the rest.  Following are some tips for makeup, skin care, and hair care and styling, to help you show off your own natural beauty.

Makeup Dos and Don’ts

DO take care of your skin.  Drink plenty of water.  Exfoliate weekly.  Use good products

that aren’t chock full of… mineral oil??  That’s right.  Many products are full of mineral oil.  Go botanical instead.

DO use good lighting to apply your makeup.  Also, check your makeup and skin in the kind of lighting in which you’ll be going out.

DON’T overdo the makeup.  Less is definitely more.  Cover flaws first.  Bring out your best points second.  A little bronzer can be invaluable for adding contour and definition to your face, especially the cheekbones.  Apply bronzer in the hollow UNDER the cheekbone, and seriously consider forgetting the blush, for a more natural and defined look.

DO choose between your eyes and your mouth as to which you’ll emphasize with makeup.  The general rule of thumb is either eyes OR mouth, and rarely both.

DO blend your makeup carefully for greater subtlety.  No one wants to see the line where your foundation ends, and eye shadow generally looks better blended as well.  Consider applying foundation with a damp makeup sponge, for a smoother, lighter application.  Don’t forget to check your hairline and neck to make sure the foundation is blended out smoothly.

DO be sure to protect your clothing from getting stained with makeup.  Consider wearing a light, short-sleeved blouse over your clothing while you’re putting your makeup on.

DO practice.  Practice makes perfect.  No top makeup artist was born knowing how to apply makeup.  Give yourself time to practice new techniques at home.  Consider taking a class.

DON’T get too shiny.  You want to show off the contours of your face, as opposed to glowing in the dark.  Makeup artists will often use a little “shine” or highlighter on the bridge of the nose, dotted in the inside corner of the eye, and lightly blended on the apple of the cheeks.

DO treat any skin conditions you may have.  While your skin is healing, use a dab of foundation and a light dusting of powder to conceal.  A heavy application of concealer can often highlight a blemish, as opposed to covering it, so use concealers only very lightly.

DO make sure that your foundation matches and blends with your skin tone.  If necessary, mix two different shades of foundation to get the right blend for your current skin tone, remembering that your skin tone will change with the seasons.

DO beware of people who sell makeup, especially on commission.  They may tell you anything just to get a bigger sale.  Consider taking a friend with you, for a second opinion.  Move slowly.

DO pluck eyebrows slowly and carefully, brushing the hair into shape first.  Begin tweezing the hair from the bottom.  Remember, you can’t put it back once it’s plucked!!

DON’T be afraid to experiment and try different things to see what looks best on you.  Listen to your instincts.  If you feel embarrassed by a certain look, try something else.  It’s a learning process.

Anti-Aging Dos and Don’ts

DO protect your skin from the sun.  NOTHING is potentially more damaging to skin than sun exposure.

DON’T get stressed out.  Easier said than done, but there actually is a lot you can do to deal with stress.  Take care of yourself.  Exercise or go for a walk or a run to clear your mind and work off your frustrations.  Treat yourself to a hot bath, spa treatment, or massage.  Get plenty of sleep.

DO smile and think happy thoughts!!  Beware unconscious frowning.  Avoid the habit of making odd faces or furrowing your brow.

DO use a good night cream.

DON’T smoke, excessive drinking, and yo-yo dieting.

DO think good thoughts.  Treat people well.  Be a person of integrity, character, and compassion.  It will reflect on your face and on the impression which you make on others.

Hair Dos and Don’ts

DO keep it simple.  Your hair should flatter you, not overpower you.

DO something with your hair!!  It needs to look – and be – well cared for and consciously styled, even if styled simply.

DO use quality botanical products to keep your hair in good condition.  You’ll be surprised how much more good you will good out of a tiny amount of quality shampoo and conditioner than out of a cheap brand, which has to be followed by heavier styling products and yet STILL never looks as good.  If you use a quality botanical shampoo and conditioner, you’ll be amazed at how little else you need.

DO invest in a quality, professional color job if you decide to go any way other than natural.  It’s money well spent.  One sign of a quality salon is the exclusive use of botanical products.

DO embrace your natural hair texture.  Make it work for you.  It’s one thing to fight it occasionally to produce a particular style, but you shouldn’t have to fight your hair every single day.

DO rinse well.  Be sure shampoos and conditioners are thoroughly rinsed out.

The Beauty of Spontaneity

“Spontaneity: To Be Curious, Creative, Offbeat, Magnetic, and Flexible”

Be Yourself

There is beauty in people who are secure enough to be at peace with or even exploit their imperfections.  Nobody is perfect, so why should you be afraid to be imperfect?

The Ingredients of Spontaneity

In order to be spontaneous, you must have allure, confidence, and compassion.

Practice Spontaneity

Get together with friends.  Go out.  Go to parties.  Introduce yourself to the people you don’t already know.  Don’t live your life as a wall flower.  Every opportunity to go to new places and meet new people is an opportunity to broaden your horizons and to develop your confidence and spontaneity.

Try new things.  Try out a comedy act.  Sing karaoke.  Play charades.  Join a new group.  Pursue a new interest.  You will find yourself building an irresistible momentum and curiosity.

… And Finally…

Don’t reach for the bottle of liquid courage.  Drugs and drinking do not create true spontaneity.  They prevent rational decision making and will thwart your efforts at developing true spontaneity and confidence.  Why try a cheap and harmful substitute when the real thing is SO much better??

The Beauty Equation, a self-described workbook, written by Nigel Barker (fashion photographer and judge for America’s Next Top Model), is a fairly quick and light read that will nevertheless make you think.  Think about the qualities that really embody a great and stand-out human being.
